Our Professional Lives

Laura Riding One of Our Horses, Nimaway

Wes has spent much of his career in the military and flew airplanes before turning to the law and serving as a JAG. After law school, Wes worked in the Senate in Washington, D.C., helping to develop policies benefitting servicemembers and veterans. Wes has done work as both a prosecutor and defense counsel. This background gave Wes the opportunity to work with people from all types of backgrounds and personalities.

Similarly, as an entrepreneur and instructor, Laura has learned to connect with people at different skill levels and character traits. She works daily building students' confidence to ride horses and compete at events across the country. She's built up riders' who've stumbled and seen her students develop into competitive athletes.

Our careers are important in the sense they have provided us with a chance to see and interact with people during their lows and highs. This builds a sense of understanding for those around us and allows us to view the world with no pre-conceived judgements or assumptions.

We also believe in a strong work ethic, giving purpose to our professional lives while balancing life at home with friends and family.

Our Favorite Vacation Spot

Getting Ready to Off-Road

Our most frequent vacation spot is a small town not too far from our home. Eureka Springs is an old Victorian-style town just over an hour away nestled in the mountains. Eureka offers us a chance to quickly get away and detach from work and the barn. We enjoy the visits because it gives us an opportunity to enjoy good food and indulge in spa treatments. We typically stay in an old hotel where we're able to enjoy the scenery from our room's balcony.

Although Eureka Springs offers a quick retreat, we also enjoy cruising, mostly to the Caribbean region. During these trips, we like to explore new locations and rely on the ease of hopping from port to port with a planned out schedule. We've been able to tour ruins, visit beaches, off-road in buggies, and zip-line. These trips also provide a chance to enjoy good food and get refreshed away from work.

What It Means to Become Parents

When we think about what it means to be parents, we think about all the different ways life's journey progresses. Parenting a child gives us an opportunity to share new life experiences, and pass along traits like kindness, honesty, and good character.

Parenting will allow us to share our life with a child and be a part of their life as they grow, learn, and discover the world. We both have fond memories growing up with positive experiences around school, play, travel, and family gatherings and will work to impart the same as parents.

We also recognize life's path is not always happy and being a parent means having sympathy, compassion, and the ability to provide safety and comfort along the way. Parenting is a responsibility like no other where everyday priorities can change at a given notice and the world now focuses on providing the best environment for the child. We are both eager to embrace this challenge and look forward to all the ups and downs parenting provides.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

Our house sits on 8 acres and includes a horse barn on the property. We have 4 bedrooms with 3 of those rooms upstairs. There's a recently remodeled kitchen with an island and a nice breakfast nook looking out behind the property at the horse fields.

We have around 17 horses living on the property which range in size from small ponies to larger horses. Laura spends much of her time in and around the barn, to include an indoor and outdoor arena.

Back inside the house, we have a family room with plenty of seating for everyone. There's also a room next to the family room which can also be used for relaxing and one we hope to build a library in soon.

There are houses going up all around the property and we now often see people running or biking on the road at the end of our driveway. We also see other kids of varying ages playing outside in the neighborhoods being developed. There's a small pond and dog park just across the street from our house.

We enjoy sitting out on the front porch in the evenings looking out over the front yard which is a good distance from the road. It can be quiet while still feeling very connected to the community.

Our Extended Families

Laura's Family

Our families enjoy traveling and spending time visiting with each other, typically around the holidays and eating. On Wes' side of the family, we have recently started taking an annual cruise with his parents and his sister and brother-in-law. We normally travel to a warm location, such as the Caribbean. Last year, we all tried a high-up zip line for the first time.

Laura's family also enjoys travel and visiting locations known for their cuisine, like New Orleans.

Wes' Parents

Wes has a sister who is married. Wes' sister and her husband love dogs and currently has 4 pups. Laura has a brother with a young son, and they live in Seattle.

Wes' parents are retired teachers and currently live in Texas, just south of the Oklahoma border. We are able to drive down there in about 4.5 hours. When we visit, we normally sit around the dinner table catching up.

Laura's parents live nearby, about 20 minutes away. Laura's dad and mom are both retired after working various corporate jobs which took them all over the country.

Our families are excited about the adoption and both sets of our parents are looking forward to a new addition to our family.

From Us to You

First of all, thank you for taking the time to look over our profile and give us the opportunity to tell you a little more about who we are and what an adoption would mean for our family. We have no doubt you're facing tremendously difficult decisions, but know that if you ask us to walk this journey with you, we will be there supporting you every step of the way.

We've been together for nearly ten years and married for almost six now. We've travelled together, taken on challenges together, and look forward to whatever the future holds. Expanding our family with a child is a journey we've both wanted for a long time and are seeking to make that dream a reality. We have a lot of love to give a little one and believe we have an environment for a child to grow up healthy, strong, and ready for what the world has in store.

Wes has served in the military for nearly 20 years and deployed to many countries throughout his time in service. Doing so allowed him the opportunity to meet different people from all parts of the world and gain a perspective unique to working and living in both comfortable and not so comfortable locations.

As a horseback riding instructor, Laura has learned to work with many different types of people of all ages, but mostly with children. She has the ability to develop her riders' goals into a reality and compete in a sport which requires a special bond with horses.

As parents, we intend to bring those traits into raising a child. We will strive to be fair, honest, and supportive. We were raised to respect people from all walks of life and view the world through a lens of compassion, understanding, and open-mindedness. We also want to share routine updates through emails or phone calls and want you to be confident you've made the right choice with us. We are also open to certain visits throughout life and welcome the opportunity for you to celebrate special milestones and achievements.

Living on a farm brings a sense of hard work coupled with a respect for animals and nature unique from life in more urban areas or cities. Although we live in a growing area, our property allows an escape from the busy nature of crowded streets or bustling activity.

Our home offers a great deal of love, safety, and a sense of happiness. There are often other children at the property of various ages who take lessons at the barn, so there would certainly be no shortage of kids to interact with. The northwest Arkansas community offers an ever expanding environment of great schools, parks, sporting activities, family museums, and other outdoor events for nature lovers.

Without question, your child will live in a home surrounded with a sense of kindness and belonging. They will grow up with loving parents who will always keep their best interests at heart, striving to raise a bright, amazing, and successful child who will have the ability to be anything they wish to be!
